Bodhicitta

Bodhicitta — often translated as the 'mind of awakening' — is presented here not as something reserved for advanced practitioners, but as a path that can begin from an extremely humble starting point and still end in arahantship, maha-arahantship, or even full Buddhahood.

How a small act becomes a complete cause

Central to this teaching is the idea of 'causal fulfillment' (hetu purnaya) — the completion of a cause into something whole. The illustration given is the well-known story of a poor old woman who offered alms to Gautama Buddha. On the surface, it was a modest gift from someone with very little. But through the Buddha's omniscient knowledge, that offering was recognised and received as a completed cause — a hetu purnaya — carrying weight far beyond its outward simplicity.

The lesson is that bodhicitta does not require wealth, status, or an elaborate practice to begin. What matters is the sincerity and completeness of the act itself, and how it is received within the wider causal fabric of the path toward awakening.
